A new study suggests that the anti-depressant drug Viagra could cause a potentially life-threatening heart attack.
Viagra, sold under the brand name Cialis, is the most prescribed medication by doctors to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men.
Researchers from University of Michigan's School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Ann Arbor studied the effects of Viagra, a popular brand-name drug that's taken to treat conditions such as ED and heart problems.
Viagra, which was tested in the laboratory for its effectiveness in treating ED, was found to increase the risk of a heart attack, which is the most common type of cardiac arrhythmia seen in men taking nitrates, such as nitroglycerin, and recreational drugs like cocaine or whiskey.
"This is an important finding," said lead study author Dr. Joseph F. Gatto, MD, assistant professor of medicine at Michigan's Michigan State University School of Medicine.
Viagra was originally developed as a heart-healthy alternative to the popular prescription drug Cialis. The drug was first introduced in the late 1980s to treat conditions such as hypertension and angina, but it proved to be an ineffective treatment because the side effects of the drug were so bad that it required hospitalization and the drug's withdrawal in the late 1990s.
"I've had people who've had a heart attack suffer a heart attack come on suddenly," said Gatto, who is now a professor of cardiovascular medicine at Michigan's University of Michigan.
Viagra has been studied extensively in patients with ED and coronary artery disease. The most common side effect is a mild, sudden and severe drop in blood pressure.
Viagra has been found to be effective for the treatment of ED in patients who have cardiovascular risk factors like high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. Some of the symptoms of ED are:
A study published in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine in June found that men taking Viagra experienced a significant reduction in the number of heart attacks in the first year they used the drug. The number of deaths was also reduced.
More research is needed before scientists can determine if Viagra may be a more effective treatment for ED than other medications such as Cialis or Levitra.
"This is one of the most important findings in our study," Fatto said. "This study suggests that this new study may have implications for other health care treatments."
Cialis was first introduced in the late 1980s to treat erectile dysfunction and had been shown to increase blood flow to the penis. Viagra was found to reduce the risk of a heart attack by more than 40 percent.
Gatto and his colleagues analyzed data from more than 3,300 patients treated with Viagra and found that the drug increased the risk of a heart attack in about 1 percent of the Viagra-treated patients. More research is needed before researchers can determine if Viagra may be a more effective treatment for ED than other medications such as Cialis or Levitra.
Viagra was found to increase the risk of a heart attack by about 30 percent in patients treated with Viagra. The study was published in the September issue ofNew England Journal of Medicine.
In an editorial accompanying the study, Dr. Steven Nissen, MD, director of cardiology at Massachusetts General Hospital, said the new findings suggest that Viagra may be effective for patients who experience ED.
"The new study shows that Viagra may be effective in treating ED and that it is not associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity or mortality," Nissen said.
Gatto said he did not know if Viagra would be the first FDA-approved drug to treat ED in the United States. Viagra is currently only available in generic form. Other ED drugs approved by the FDA include Cialis, Levitra and Staxyn, but these drugs are currently out of reach for many patients.
About one in 10 men who take Viagra will experience a heart attack. That number is expected to increase over time. Because of its effectiveness in treating ED, Viagra has been shown to reduce the risk of heart attacks in some patients.
Although Viagra has been shown to be effective in some patients with ED, Gatto said that was not the case for Viagra in the U. S.
